Welcome Restaurant Miri: Review, Fusion Cuisines & Hong Kong Breakfast
After returning to Miri from Kuala Lumpur, a couple of friends took me to Welcome Restaurant, located at D-G 11 & 12, Ground Floor, Block D, Times Square. This restaurant offers a diverse menu featuring Hong Kong-style British breakfast & lunch, Sarawakian cuisine, Chinese dishes, Western fusion food, and even some Thai-inspired options. If you're in the mood for a place that serves a little bit of everything, this spot is definitely worth a try.
Ordering Experience: Whatsapp QR or Checklist Method
They’ve got a couple of ways to order here:
- Checklist Method - You can write down your table number and dish codes, then pass it along to the staff. It’s quick, easy, and straightforward.
- WhatsApp QR Ordering - This was a first time experience, especially when it comes from such a big establishment. You scan a QR code, which connects you to their WhatsApp. From there, you send your order directly, using the same codes. A bit unconventional, but a really interesting way to take somebodies order.
Seating Choices
Welcome Restaurant offers three main dining areas: outdoor seating, lower indoor seating, and an indoor second floor. If you're dining as a pair, the lower indoor area features classic American diner-style seats and tables, providing a cozy and personal experience. For larger groups, the other seating options accommodate families of four to five comfortably. When we arrived at the restaurant, it was packed, so we opted to head to the top floor to find a table.
Food Review: Good Portions, Decent Taste
My friends and I ordered a few different dishes—Sarawak Laksa, Beef Omelette Fried Rice, and Cheesy Tomato Chicken. Each dish came in a generous portion and was nicely presented. Overall, the 3 food was "okay"—not mind-blowing, but solid enough that we'd come back here until we find a place that offers something similar, cheaper, or better.
Cheesy Tomato Chicken
As for the Cheesy Tomato Chicken, I went with the rice option. It was served just as pictured in the menu, arriving in a dim sum steaming bowl wrapped in tinfoil. The dish included a generous amount of cheese, and the chicken was tender and juicy. The portion was big enough that I couldn’t even finish it—probably because the cheese made it so filling. Priced at RM18.90, it felt like a fair deal for what you get, but like I said, it was just “okay”.
Thai Styled Fried Pork
During my second visit to the restaurant, I discovered they offered Thai Styled Fried Pork. If you’ve read my Fried Pork article from Woo Fook Seafood Restaurant, you know I’m a fan of delicious Thai-style pork, and this restaurant serves a solid version. Unlike the dish at Woo Fook, which was more savory and less sweet, this one truly captures the essence of authentic Thai flavors. The pork was perfectly crispy, and the sauce achieved a delightful balance of sweet and spicy. The accompanying vegetables provided a refreshing crunch that complemented the dish beautifully. At a reasonable price of RM 11.90, it’s one of the dishes I’d highly recommend.
Desserts
For dessert, I tried the Bubur Cha Cha. Personally, I found it quite enjoyable, especially compared to other establishments where it often tends to be overly sweet. This version had just the right amount of sweetness, making it a satisfying finish to the meal. However, if you prefer your Bubur Cha Cha on the sweeter side, I’d recommend steering clear of this one, as it may not meet your taste.
Welcome Restaurant Menu Highlights
Here’s a glimpse of the other variety of dishes Welcome Restaurant offers that I haven’t tried out.
To learn more about their extensive offerings, you'll just have to visit the place yourself, as they have many options that would take a long time for me to write out.
